A growing supplement operation can often automate bottling incrementally rather than purchasing a fully integrated line at the first step. Done in a sensible order, it can reduce unnecessary upfront capital while letting later purchases reflect actual production data.
This guide is about that first configuration: which functions are core, which can stay manual longer than you'd think, where semi-automation earns its cost, and how to specify the entry setup so the expansion path stays open. It's bottling-stage specific. The core functions
At a basic functional level, the core tasks are product into the bottle, closure, and required labeling; sealing, coding, inspection, desiccant insertion, and other stages may also be required depending on the product and market requirements.
Everything available on a full bottle packaging line — unscrambling, desiccant or cotton insertion, induction sealing, coding, checkweighing, metal detection — is driven by product requirements, customer requirements, or throughput. Real requirements, often. Separating "core function" from "requirement that applies to me" is what keeps an entry budget honest.
Counting is often the first automation step worth evaluating
If hand-counting is the current bottleneck, counting is often the first automation step worth evaluating. No other purchase changes that constraint.
The entry tier here is semi-automatic, and it's a real tier rather than a stepping stone. A plate-style counter like the MK-800 counts capsules, tablets, softgels, and granules into bottles or bags at a nominal 12–26 bottles per minute across a 5–100 count-per-bottle range, in a 600 × 500 × 700 mm footprint on single-phase power at 150W. Electronic semi-automatic counters like the BS Series and BS-C trade the fixed mold for adjustable counts — 1 to 9,999 per bottle without changing spare parts on the BS Series — which matters if your SKUs use different counts.
The MK-800 is compact, while the BS and BS-C families provide semi-automatic electronic options with different capacities and configurations; the BS-C is described as a compact station that can drop onto a bench or small conveyor, and most BS-C models don't require compressed air. What can stay manual, and for how long
Bottle feeding. An operator placing bottles on the bench or a short conveyor is workable at semi-automatic counting speeds. Automate feeding when the counter is waiting on the operator.
Capping. Hand-capping is slow and tiring but viable at low volume, and it's a common second upgrade after counting.
Labeling. Hand-applying labels is labor-intensive relative to its output, which is why some brands automate labeling earlier than capping despite it being further downstream. If your bottles are round and your labels are wrap-around, this is a reasonable early automation candidate.
Coding. Lot and date coding can be performed offline at low volume.
Where semi-automation earns its cost
A useful test is whether the stage is (a) the current constraint, (b) a quality risk when done by hand, or (c) both.
Counting is often both — hand counts vary between operators, and variance in count per bottle is a customer-facing quality issue, not just a speed issue. Capping is mostly (a). Labeling is mostly (a) with a cosmetic quality element.
Induction sealing sits outside that test. If the packaging specification requires an induction foil seal, a compatible induction-sealing process becomes part of the required packaging workflow — an induction sealing machine applies tamper-evident foil seals, designed to support bottle integrity depending on liner and bottle materials. That's a specification question, not a labor question.
Apply the (a)/(b)/(c) test to desiccant. If your formulation is moisture-sensitive, a desiccant inserter addresses a product requirement that can also be handled by hand at low volume — so it's usually an (a) decision, deferrable until the labor becomes the constraint.
Specifying the entry setup so it can grow
This is where entry buyers either protect or compromise their expansion path.
Leave the floor run. Even if you're buying one machine, plan the bench or conveyor length for the line you expect. Stages get added in sequence, and reserving space is easier than retrofitting it.
Confirm the utilities the next stage will need. Semi-automatic counting generally runs on standard power. Later stages bring pneumatic requirements — an integrated line needs clean dry compressed air for pneumatic modules. Knowing that now can mean one facility project instead of two.
Standardize bottle and cap formats early. Every additional format multiplies change parts across every stage you add later. Running fewer formats is one of the more effective cost controls available to a small brand.
Match the counting tier to your SKU mix, not just your volume. A fixed-mold plate counter suits a consistent count; adjustable electronic counting suits varied counts. This is the entry-tier decision most likely to lead to a replacement rather than a keeper.

When to stop adding and specify a line
At some point, stage-by-stage stops making sense. The signal is integration: when three or four stations exist and operators are moving bottles between them, the handling itself becomes the constraint, and an integrated automatic capsule and tablet counting bottling line — counting, rejection, capping, sealing, labeling, and outfeed as one coordinated flow — starts to make economic sense.
Lines can start lean and add stages as volume grows; recognizing when "lean plus additions" has become an awkwardly assembled line is a judgment call worth making with someone who has seen both.
